The much awaited, much talked about Boeing 787 dreamliner is scheduled to make its debut in the international aviation market on July 8 at its Seattle plant. The first test flight of the aircraft is planned for late August and its first delivery is scheduled for May 2008. What is really striking about the aircraft is its heavy reliance on carbon composite material which reduces its overall weight and operating cost.
The aircraft already has an impressive order book of 490 orders which is expected to touch 500 very soon, according to Mike Bair, General Manager. According to a company source, the 787 is currently sold out until 2013. Buoyed by this overwhelming response, the company is planning to increase production of this new model. It has outsourced the production of the fuselage, wingbox and other key structural elements to partners across the globe.

Thin and skinny models have, for some time now, dominated the global fashion world. Take any fashion show and you will find models with hardly any flesh over their bones walking down the ramps. Such is the fascination with a thin figure, that some of the young girls starve themselves, literally. This horific fact came to light when the 22-year Uruguayan model, Luisel Ramos, died last year. In an attempt to stay thin and thereby increase her popularity in the fashion circuit, Ramos abstained from food for several days and suffered a cardiac arrest. Ana Carolina Reston, a Brazilian model, too suffered from anorexia nervosa and died.

This disturbing trend has caught the concerns of the fashion industry and measures are being planned to correct it. The British Fashion Council announced an independent inquiry into the health of the models. Its panel will examine whether designers and agencies are imposing dangerous physical standards on their representatives. British Cultural Secretary, Tessa Jowell, urged the fashion industry to keep extremely thin women off the ramps. The fashion industry seems to be divided on the whole issue of using skinny models. In September Madrid Fashion Week banned models with a BMI of less than 18 from participating in the event. However, London Fashion Week, owned by the British Fashion Council, resisted a similar ban during February this year instead urging designers to use only healthy looking models aged over 16. BFC said that it would complete the inquiry before the London Fashion Week and would submit its recommendation which can be implemented during the LFW.

Come 2011 and the kids in the United Arab Emirates need not flip through the comic books to see their favorite heroes like the Spider-Man, the Iron Man or the X-Men! The UAE-based construction major Al Ahli Group has joined hands with US-based Marvel Entertainment Inc. to set up a theme park in Dubai at an estimated investment of USD 1 billion.
The theme park, reportedly the first of its kind in the Arab region, will use the latest in technology and set a new benchmark for theme parks globally giving visitors a ‘never before’ experience. MEI, in a statement, said that it chose Dubai to set up this ambitious project as it feels that Dubai is one of the fastest growing economies in the world today. David Maisel, Chairman of Marvel Studios said,”

Marvel is a brand that is recognized globally via its ever expanding list of ‘Super Hero’ characters. Now, it won’t be much longer until the children in Pan Arabia and the world can experience new and exciting rides with Marvel’s Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four and many other Super Heroes right here in the UAE”.

The creative team, which consists of some of the most spectacular creative minds from around the globe, will be based in Hollywood, Orlando and Dubai throughout the four year development process.
